The Five Realms of Humanity

I came across this concept for the first time in college in a Health and Wellness class. Growing up I was raised SGI Buddhist, however ‘spirituality’ is typically not talked about in black communities without it either turning religious (usually entailing staunch Christian views despite the church being used in a the past as an enslavement tool for white supremacists) or going to the other side of our culture we don’t really talk about (e.g. native shamanistic practices before enslavement, voodooism, general spirituality). Also known to some as ‘woo woo bullshit’.
So when I came across the pillars of Health and Wellness, meaning if one of these areas aren’t ‘healthy’ then your lifespan will most likely be affected, I was surprised that spirituality in general was necessary for a human to have an optimal life. This concept stuck with me for almost 10 years until today.
One interesting thing about this is…I originally had the idea that these realms held the key to helping with Ex-D when I revived this blog. Once I decided that I would delved directly into dealing with my own Ex-D, I discovered here that these concepts are already included in Existential Therapy (they call it the four worlds)! It took me awhile to find this because, surprisingly yet not, Ex-D therapy isn’t strictly handled by psychology/psychologist – it’s a mix of philosophy, psychotherapy, and other elements that allows this to permeate a plethora of both scientific and spiritual fields of study.
Long story short – this means I’m on the right path.
The 5 Realms (briefly) Explained
Physical Realm (PR) – This one was explained in Hunger: Part 1 so check it out there if you haven’t already. In Ex-D therapy it’s called the Physical Dimension and includes the physical environment that our vessels interact with.
Mental Realm (MR) – This one might seem tricky because of the association of ‘mental’ with ‘brain’; I want to separate these now because it can be a bit hard to separate them later when we get into the other realms. For now, the MR will refer to our minds, egos, inner monologues, personalities, and thoughts. Ex-D therapy calls this the Psychological Dimension.
Emotional Realm (ER) – Again, want to separate the concept of the ‘heart’ from ’emotions’ just like separating ‘brain’ from ‘mind’; this realm deals strictly with the feelings and emotions of humans. Moods, mood-states, and state of being strongly correlate to this realm. Ex-D therapy splits this concept between PR and MR; probably due to psycho-therapeutic (making up words here apparently) nature of the therapy itself.
Social Realm (SR) – One of the more innately ‘humanistic’ realms, the SR is pretty straightforward. Humans are social creatures by nature and there are numerous studies showing how loneliness (even perceived) decreases our lifespan. Social bonds, personal relationships, public veneration, charisma, etc. are all included under this realm. Ex-D therapy calls this the….Social Dimension (again, pretty straight forward).
Spiritual Realm (SpR) – Lastly, but definitely not least-ly, the SpR involves everything else that isn’t the other realms; the things that affect our soul, the entity that directs our bodies, minds, feelings, and relationships. Theology, Religion, general Spirituality, auras, spirit (think kiai, ki, chi, etc. in martial arts), etc. all fall under this realm. Spiritual Dimension (of course) is what it’s called in Ex-D therapy.
Understanding how these are innately separate will help a lot when we start combining them to understand the fabric of our society that we’ve painted for ourselves.
PR + SpR = Yoga, Acupuncture, Martial Arts
MR + SR = E-Sports, Games, philosophy
ER + PR + SR = Responsibility
MR + SpR = Clairvoyance, Meditation
I hesitated to explain these concepts out-right since I’ll be eventually getting to them in the F&F tale – I decided to go ahead and make this post instead as a ‘hub’ for readers who may come into the F&F world at different times and may not know where to start.
An F&F vlog will be started soon (yay!) to get more in–depth within the science bits (I hate having y’all ‘take my word for it’ and making y’all google things when I can just provide a reference page of all the sites, links, etc.). Since that’s the case, I’ll leave this post here to serve as reference guide in case things get a little confusing.
