Realm Introduction: The Realm of the Mental

First timers, lost, and confused ones – Start Here!

*Disclaimer: I’m not an established scientist nor philosopher as of yet. I’m just a trying to find my way in the world based on how I see it.

Cultivating one’s soul in the The Five Realms of Humanity should be based around the ‘real’.

‘Real’ as in things that are observable and that have consequences.

Something could be intangible and incorporeal, yet be ‘real’ – like the soul.

The ‘Mental Realm’ (MR) is the most complex of the five realms due to it being the ‘playground’ of ‘human trifecta’ – ‘body (vessel)’, ‘soul’, and ‘humanity’.

Question: What use of a brain do jellyfish have?

Answer: None – they don’t have a single brain cell in their whole genetic makeup.

If it’s possible to exist as an entity without having a brain, brain cells, or brain matter, then why do humans need brains? Well…we don’t ‘need’ a fully functional brain (see my arguments on ‘human vegetables’) to exist as a human, but without it we wouldn’t be able to function as an organism (as least not one that would be considered ‘alive’). Why is it then that the brain is so integral to our humanity?

I believe it is due to the intangible part of our brains that a higher IQ allows to ‘us’ (souls):

Consciousness and the concept of ‘the mind’

Our vessels have consciousness – it reacts to things that our minds may not have realized (which we tend to call ‘subconscious’). That sort of ‘awareness’ is gifted to us through the genetic programming of D.N.A. – instincts and basic emotions comprise most of our motivations that turn into action. If that is the case, then what prevents our bodies from instinctively eating food that doesn’t belong to us due to hunger, or stops us from raping the most attractive person that comes into view when we are sexually aroused?

That would be your conscious.

Your conscious is the ‘voice’ of your soul.

“Think before you act/speak!” = Consult with your soul before letting your body act on its own.

“Don’t you have a conscious?” = Acting more like an ‘animal’ or ‘divinity’ rather than a ‘human’

Conscious = voice of the soul

Subconscious = voice of the vessel

Flinching is a reactive, subconscious action; martial artist first work on this common flaw by learning how to keep their eyes open even when a punch is coming (or even if it lands). Through repeated practice, they condition their bodies to ‘unlearn’ that subconscious reaction. How ingrained some subconscious actions are depends on the person; some people if hit hard enough, despite all training, will still close their eyes from the impact (if not knocked out while standing), while some others will still be able to despite their heads spinning. If anything, this shows that the subconscious IS malleable, if not reprogrammable.

This creates an interesting trifecta when you throw ‘humanity’ in the mix. When you are alone with your own thoughts, most people that I know at some point would converse with ‘themselves’ in their inner monologue. In this environment devoid of human judgement, you and your vessel may decide to do something that, if other humans beared witness, society would deem…’unacceptable’. When societal eyes are back on you, then you work with your vessel’s voice to decide ‘how to be human’.

It is through this balancing act how we have come to be who we are.

Is a lifeform that does not have the mental faculties to comprehend the presence of a soul have the cosmic qualifications to have a ‘soul’? I’m not sure, but it would make sense if you believe in the concept of ‘lower/higher’ beings (an evolutionary totem pole if you will). If this is true, then viruses, bacteria, and jellyfish would all be considered to have ‘life’ yet be ‘soulless’, contrary to animals like cats, dogs, elephants, and dolphins.

We tend to treat things that are more intelligent more humanly than other existences that are less so.

This is why A.I. freaks us out so much – same IQ capabilities, but lack of EQ makes them unrelatable to our ‘animal side. And the unknown is programmed in most animals to instill fear in order to more easily provoke a reaction for self preservation. Just like how we rarely seek out other ‘lesser’ species to completely eradicate them off of the face of the world, I seriously doubt ‘Terminator’ fears will actually come into fruition.

What does this mean for as as ‘humans’ then?

Well, your soul will have to balance out the urges and tendencies of your body (Phys. Realm) and emotions (Emotional Realm) as a mediator. That compromise between ‘mind’ and ‘body’ will culminate into your personality, character, and humanity (Social Realm). Making sure the soul is not overburdened by the demands of society and your own body is what ‘soul searching’ and meditation is for (Spiritual Realm).

To take your first steps in getting in touch with your soul, practice differentiating between your vessel’s thoughts and ‘your’ thoughts. Spend time alone and take notes on the kind of inner monologues you have with yourself. Identify who the ‘monologuer’ is and who the ‘audience’ is. Notice which impulses you are okay giving into (aka guilt-free) and the ones you do get into that weigh on your conscious.

And that’s it for now. For those who will be (consciously) getting in touch with their souls for the first time – congratulations!
