I Need A Freedom

From the way things look, the next time I might be able to have a car will be in Japan…

and that makes me sad.  The reason for this is because a car symbolizes much more than just a vehicle to most people – to many other countries it is a commodity; to the rich it’s a sign of power; to a teenager it’s a sign of power.

To me, one who has grown up in South Carolina, a car is an indispensable necessity for my sanity.  In Japan, not having a car wasn’t an issue because all I needed was my bike and I was good.  My first car has been broken since the beginning of my Junior year and there is no way I can afford to fix it without it costing as much as a different car.

To those of you who do not know my living conditions, I live on campus with just about every single student that goes here (which is a little over 400+).  We eat, breathe, study, and exist in the same academic atmosphere 24/7.  The only way to get away is to have a car, know a friend who has a car and isn’t an asshole, or use the shuttle service run by the school with a limited amount of places you can go.

This absolutely is a vexing situation when you have no way to leave campus for WEEKS.  Being here physically isn’t such an issue, but you can’t escape the people here when they start getting on your nerves.  It’s equally annoying when there aren’t people who are similar around you (for example – similar background, similar ethnicity, etc.)  I’ve talked about this in many earlier blogs, so I’ll leave this thought process here, but it does make me miss being around similar people.

I’m considering renting a car or borrowing one from a person who will go on study abroad soon.  I can’t wait for the day where I won’t have to hurt for money anymore.  That day will come soon too, I’m working on it to make it so.

That freedom…I want that.  I want the ability to be able to get away again.  My circumstances determine what that freedom may be, but nonetheless it’s still wanted.
