Hunger: Part 1

I’ve been meaning to post this blog post for a while but I guess that’s how this depression goes. One interesting thing that I have noticed is that one of the first things to go in depression is hunger. But hunger… isn’t an emotion but a state-of-being. Not only does hunger correlate to Maslow’s first hierarchy need, but it’s also the topic that leads us into our first Realm.
Introduction: The Physical Realm
(The ‘realm’ concept is one that you will see a lot going forward in the Snowfield Rhapsody world. Eventually all 5 Realms of Humanity will be examined, but the first one I will focus on is the Physical Realm.)
The easiest way to imagine the Physical Realm is your actual physical body, your ‘vessel’. From now on, I will refer to the body as the vessel because it is just that; a vessel for the other for everything we experience as humans. Everything experienced by us to ‘happens’ to our vessel, therefore it is the most important realm to pay attention to first. Even our instincts, senses, and everything else ‘primal’ falls into the Physical Realm. Because most human experiences manifest in the PR is why this realm is the one we feel most familiar with.
Sometimes you’ll notice a lot of crossover between the realms and that is to be expected since all Human Experience cannot be distilled down into one; however, as we go along I will emphasize which experiences correlate to its corresponding realm(s).
Now back to Hunger
The reason why hunger isn’t considered an emotion is because hunger is a necessity to live (whereas we do not need ‘emotions’ to continue living). It is 100% neutral and it is the most prevalent law of the jungle. The things that hunger (un)consciously allows to do for simple survival is the part that scares us. For example, we frown upon thieves, yet can understand them if they stole because they or their family were hungry. Sure, there will always be some who no matter what thinks they should be persecuted, but I would be hard-pressed to find someone who would rather die than break the rules just once.
Hunger concepts are not only limited to the ones felt by the stomach though. As mentioned before, hunger is a state-of-being; when applied to realms, state-of-being terms can be seen as ‘lenses’ – a way to view a state-of-being across multiple realms. In viewing hunger through the PR one can see the main physical effect of hunger: Starvation.
One of the very first signs that something is wrong with a living being is when they lose their appetite. ‘Loss of appetite’ is the very first symptom of a lot of illnesses but the one thing I want to focus on today is specifically on water intake. Yes, water is not a ‘food’, yet one can live longer on only water than any other digestible substance (that isn’t primarily consisted of water). And that’s because…
Water is Life; and oftentimes we take life for granted.
Interestingly enough, for as long as I can remember, I have never really cared for water unless I was absolutely parched, it was the only thing to drink, and it was ice cold. It wasn’t until college that I learned from a friend struggling with depression that water helps with depression. I didn’t know that I was existentially depressed (my whole life!) until a couple of months ago but for some reason those words always stuck with me. I now know that reason was in order to pass it along to you all.
I’ll end part one here because I really want to emphasize the point of drinking water help with with your depression. And even if you are not a depressed reader, I strongly recommend you to examine your relationship with water. Again, this blog is an effort to combine spirituality and science and water is the ultimate physiology/spiritual booster.
Water is life; DON’T take it for granted.
